Part Three – Operations
At this point, you’ve invested time and money into finding the right people, providing effective training, and keeping your team engaged – how do you continue with effective operations to retain your top talent?
This part of the employee lifecycle can be tricky. As an employer, you need to maintain successful operations, but you also need to ensure that your employees are applying their training and skills in the most effective manner possible, while staying engaged and satisfied with their position. This can be a delicate balance and one that is difficult to maintain.
Do smooth operations create happy employees, or do happy employees create smooth operations? The correct answer is both. A study by economists at the University of Warwick found that happiness led to a 12% spike in productivity, while unhappy workers were 10% less productive. As the research team put it, “The driving force seems to be that happier workers use the time they have more effectively, increasing the pace at which they can work without sacrificing quality.”
When team members are happy at work, they are better collaborators, work toward common goals, and are more innovative. Every so often, take time to get your team together and do an interactive activity. This will help them get to know each other better and will allow time for recognition. However, don’t confuse recognition events with unproductive time. Events that bring employees together in a positive way extend productivity in the long run.
According to the Forbes article “How to Increase Productivity by Employee Happiness”, unexpected positive experiences deliver a bigger impact than expected experiences, and reward frequency is more important than size. Focusing on team members’ achievements leads to better job appreciation. It’s important for employees to feel appreciated and have positive experiences and rewards at work; these ideas can help to ensure happier team members and ultimately, more productive operations.
